Songs with the essence of Ibiza

This has been a year in which social responsibility and respect for others has placed restrictions on pleasure and fun such as dancing, in public places at least.

This has been a year in which social responsibility and respect for others has placed restrictions on pleasure and fun such as dancing, in public places at least. Social distancing and limits imposed on entertainment venues have partially turned off the music that has always featured so largely in island life, and so we have decided to get you going again with some of those all-time favourites that have a single common denominator, namely, that their video clips were filmed in Ibiza.

  1. Club Tropicana – Wham!: With its typical Eighties vibe, this video with a young George Michael provides a glimpse of the parties at the legendary Hotel Pikes, as well as the magical countryside around Sant Antoni de Portmany. One striking feature of the video is how the stars drive around the island in a Mehari that still today remains a truly iconic vehicle.
  2. Lambada – Kaoma: This music video was filmed in 1989 on the island of Tagomago. The breathtakingly beautiful coastline that features in this song which has been danced to by generations of fun lovers, is Ibizan, and video stars were captivated by the energy of this little island.
  3. Barcelona – Montserrat Caballé and Freddie Mercury: The soundtrack of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 was filmed in Ibiza, at the Ku discotheque some years earlier, in April 1987, as part of a magical live performance, accompanied by an orchestra and with an audience that was lucky to witness a legendary event that has endured over time.
  4. Locomía – Locomía: Dalt Vila, Ku discotheque, Malibu or different Ibizan beaches were some of the settings chosen for this song which, in 1989, made fans a fashion accessory when dancing and which put Ibiza firmly on the map of the contemporary scene.
  5. Un Emozione per sempre – Eros Ramazzotti: Sa Caleta and the streets of the port of Ibiza are the stars of an extremely romantic ballad, with the Italian song writer featuring the houses round the shipyard, the island’s traditional bars, its fields of fig trees and its old whitewashed houses. A video clip for falling in love with the island.
  6. I turn to you – Mel C: For anyone missing the island’s discos, the ex-Spice Girl, Mel C, invites us to remember the Ibiza that we would so love to return to, recalling once again the dance floors of the clubs and depicting the magical coastline of Sant Antoni de Portmany.
  7. Get Get Dow – Paul Johnson: The star of this video clip digs a hole in the sand of an Ibizan beach and then launches herself on the dance floor. A psychedelic video for getting carried away and feeling the island’s true vibe. The Can Marça cave features prominently in the video which ends with a spectacular sunset.
  8. Energy 52 – Café del Mar. Unconditional – The muses rapt.: If anything, this video clip shot between Ses Salines, Es Vedra and Balafia, conveys precisely that, energy. A DJ travels the island with a case full of music that is bound to make us dance, in this place famous for some of the most stunning sunsets on the planet, as we listen to its own special soundtrack.
  9. Primavera anticipada – Laura Pausini and James Blunt: This romantic duet takes us through the streets of Dalt Vila showcasing the walls of the old town bathed by the Mediterranean waters, its traditional whitewashed houses and the magic of an island that so captivated the British song writer that he now has his own recording studio in Ibiza. For the nostalgic among us, this video filmed in both Spanish and English, also features the legendary Café Pereyra.
  10. My Friend – Groove Armada: And we round off this top 10 with a song filmed around Sant Antoni de Portmany and Sant Josep de sa Talaia, which, while featuring the area’s hotels, discotheques, swimming pools and beauty spots such as Platges de Compte, show how the power of music is able to transport us back to those happy times in Ibiza. This film recreates the star’s happy holidays with her friends and it is the perfect metaphor for helping us to relive those longed for trips we have dreamed about all year, and in 2021 we know that once again it will take us back to the white island.
