There are many theatre lovers on the island of Ibiza, so every year the calendar of plays scheduled at venues such as Can Ventosa is very extensive and caters for all tastes.
In February, for example, there are various performances starring great actors from the national scene, such as Juan Echanove and Ricardo Gómez, who will bring ‘Rojo’ (Red) to life on 16th February. This is a play that tells the story of Mark Rothko, one of the great representatives of so-called Abstract Expressionism, who is entrusted with the complex task of painting a series of murals, for an extraordinarily high price, to decorate the elitist Four Seasons restaurant in New York.
Also in February, on 22nd and 23rd, the play ‘Clásicos Excéntricos’ (Eccentric Classics) will be staged, a performance that aims to make spectators enjoy the beauty of classical music, performing pieces in a humorous vein and with a wide repertoire of instruments that make the performance a great visual and musical spectacle.
The next big event at this theatre will take place on 1st, 2nd and 3rd March to narrate the ‘Milagro en el Convento de Santa María Juana’ (Miracle in the Convent of Santa María Juana), a humorous play that tells the story of a convent that is under threat of closure and in which the sisters who live there have to give free rein to their ingenuity to become entrepreneurs and save it from disappearance.
One of the most eagerly awaited performances of this season, starring Carmen Maura and Félix Gómez, is ‘La Golondrina’ (The Swallow), which tells the story of Amelia, a stern singing teacher, who opens the doors of her home to Ramón, a young man who wants to improve his vocal technique in order to sing in the memorial service of his recently deceased mother. An event that will take place at this venue on 8th and 9th March.
Other plays will take place at Can Ventosa, such as ‘Lluvia constante’ (Non-Stop Rain), on 14th, 15th and 16th March. This play tells the story of two policemen, friends since childhood, who, over a period of just a few days, face a series of events that will change their lives forever. And on 29th, 30th and 31st March is the play ‘Como la Comedia Misma’ (Like Comedy Itself), a performance that reflects on our passage through life.
There is also a theatre space for the youngest members of the family in the Eivissa Municipal Library, which includes children’s theatre, storytelling and various workshops on 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd February, and 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th March, so that children can also share in the enjoyment of culture and art.
But theatre on the island of Ibiza is not only on stage, as every weekend there are dramatised visits to the walled city of Dalt Vila to invite tourists and residents to undertake a journey back in time through theatre and discover what life and society were like in the 16th century, when the fortifications were built, and what the customs of the little island of Ibiza were.
Sit back, let the curtain rise and enjoy!
