As in all parts of Spain, on Ibiza, seasonal fruits, vegetables and fish are the main ingredients of people’s daily diet. Ibiza has its own range of seasonal products. Due to its geographical location and weather conditions, a wide range of foods are at their best in terms of freshness and suitability for consumption during the autumn.
For example, the fruits that are at their peak in October and November include pomegranates, grapes, avocados and apples. It is therefore easy to find typical island dishes that include some of these products, such as apple fritters.
Moreover, the extensive Ibizan countryside remains a vibrant green colour throughout the year, not only because of its pine-covered hills but also because of its fruit orchards with almond trees, carob trees, fig trees and orange trees, and its fields full of different vegetable crops. In autumn, you can now find cauliflowers, pumpkins, peppers, green beans, aubergines and sweet potatoes.
And when it comes to fish, the product of Ibizan cuisine par excellence, it is the season for tuna, red mullet, conger eel and jack mackerel. For example, you can try one of the island’s most typical dishes, bullit de peix, a stew prepared with fish from the Ibizan Mediterranean. Another of the star dishes in the island’s restaurants and homes is charcoal-grilled Ibizan red mullet or marinated jack mackerel, a common dish in the diet of the fishermen, who have thus preserved this fish that thrives in Ibizan waters.
Seasonal fruits, vegetables or fish are foods that have many benefits for our diet, our environment and also for our economy. Ibiza has its own particular crops and fish that allow us to savour different products depending on the time of year and to apply the saying “for everything there is a season” in the kitchen.
