Ibiza has its own particular style which inspires the imagination and creates an atmosphere of warmth, thanks to the light that bathes the island all year round. These qualities are reflected in its architecture and interiors, and the external decoration of its buildings.
The constructions seem to blend in effortlessly, with their simple and practical forms that are in total harmony with the environment, complementing the beauty of the natural surroundings. In line with these precepts, Ibizan houses have been built in a way that has been passed down through the generations. The thick, whitewashed walls provide protection from heat and damp, the traditional island stone or the juniper woodwork reflect an architectural style that has been used for over 3000 years and which, in turn has inspired a decor that is rustic and simple in style.
This way of decorating homes, just like Adlib fashion, has been updated over the last 50 years taking inspiration from a spirit of freedom and good taste, with a fusion of natural and traditional elements, combined with the hippie vibe for which the island is famous. To the juniper wood furniture, fine cotton and linen curtains, ancient “demijohn” oil jars, with the island’s strawflowers or esparto mats are added pieces inspired by other countries, such as futons, carved ethnic bedheads, rattan lamps, chill out areas, colourful art work or white built-in sofas. Minimalism and respect for the surrounding environment are illustrative of this particular style of Ibizan homes, with their sparse furnishings combining with a special vibrancy and creativity.
The prominent features of the island’s homes include natural embellishments such as stone walls, aromatic juniper wood beams, ancient livestock troughs or water conduits and clay tiles. This type of décor that mimics nature, harmonises to perfection with the Arab-influenced, ethnic, floral or geometric prints.
Fabrics, such as wool or linen, are also typical of the local style and décor, with pieces made from natural fibres such as esparto baskets or containers of all kinds. And as to colour, white predominates, along with earthy ochre colours, and of course blue or turquoise, which provides a note of freshness, recalling the true essence of the Mediterranean.
Finally, essential to any traditional payes home are the hand-crafted household goods or farming tools, vintage decoration, and built-in furniture made from natural wood and embedded in the construction, as well as round door lintels inside and outside in porches.
The fact is that Ibizan décor is striking in the way that it perfectly combines the colourful hippie style and originality with a rural touch that is typical of the island. The result is a radiant atmosphere, transmitting peace, nature and simplicity, that is frequently emulated the world over.
