There are restaurants that exude history, whose every corner is full of anecdotes and that are the living testimony of the transformation of a city and its people.
Can n´Alfredo, whose doors opened in 1934, is one of those places where traditional Ibizan cuisine has survived from generation to generation, to become an establishment in which the island’s best dishes go hand in hand with a living display of its customs; a story that comes to life in a book that praises the figure of its current owner, Juan Riera, better known as “Juanito de Can´Alfredo”, who, thanks to his outgoing character and magnetic personality, attracts residents, tourists and celebrities from around the world with his affability and down-to-earth nature.
The book ‘Restaurant Ca n’Alfredo. 1934-2018’, was written by historian Felip Cirer, and features the work of photographer Aisha Bonet. It tells the story of this restaurant, located in Passeig de s’Alamera, whose history can be compared with that of the best restaurants in Spain, such as Casa Lucio or Cándido, and reveals how its rice dishes have been enjoyed by celebrities of all spheres and ages.
Juan Riera decided to immortalise his story in this book, after the award he received in 2010, the Medalla d’Or de la Ciutat d’Ibiza, for his career and efforts in promoting traditional Ibizan cuisine.
Ca n’Alfredo opened its doors in the mid-1930s, originally intended as a small café-bar, later to become a hostel and finally, a few years later, a fully-fledged restaurant. In 1941, it was bought by Joan Riera’s father, who took over the management in 1972, leading to this establishment becoming the most prestigious on the island, thanks to its quality, simplicity and discretion.
