The Crash Plan Against Illegal Holiday Homes on the Island of Ibiza launched by the regional government of Ibiza (Consell Insular d’Eivissa) and approved in November 2024 has already kicked off by implementing stricter controls and increasing re-sources devoted to inspect and penalise irregular activities.
The amount of clandestine holiday homes has a serious impact on the quality of ser-vices provided to tourists, the destination’s reputation, accessible housing and over-crowding. The Tourism Intelligence System (SIT Eivissa) and the departments de-voted to find illegal accommodation and fostering innovation and tourism planning, promotion and inspection are cooperating and working together to find illegal holi-day homes by monitoring, gathering, transforming and modelling data from holiday rental platforms.
Thanks to this cooperation between departments, the data is checked against the data in the local property registries, in the tourism inspection service and in the da-tabase of holiday home licences of the regional government of Ibiza (Consell d’Eivissa) so that the tourism inspection service can start the relevant proceedings and remove them from digital platforms like Booking or Airbnb, with whom they have reached collaboration agreements.
Other supporting actions are taken, including online and offline communications, B2B and B2C in Spanish and foreign markets, as well as the creation of special audi-ovisual contents to raise awareness of irregular activities pursued by the Crash Plan Against Illegal Holiday Homes on the Island of Ibiza.
The five town councils of the island (Eivissa, Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Santa Eulària des Riu, Sant Antoni de Portmany and Sant Joan de Labritja) also are also working alongside the Consell d’Eivissa in this plan, which is the first in Spain in the fight against illegal holiday rentals with a view to ensuring quality accommodation, reduce overcrowding, increase the supply of primary home rentals and guarantee the sus-tainability of Ibiza as a holiday destination.
